Hitachi Energy to Invest $195M USD in Quebec Transformer Expansion

30 Sep 2025
Hitachi Energy will invest an additional $195 million USD ($270 million CAD) to expand its large power transformer manufacturing facility near Montreal. The expansion, which follows a prior $100 million USD ($140 million CAD) investment in 2024, will nearly triple the plant's production capacity and create more than 500 new jobs.

The project is part of Hitachi Energy's $9 billion USD global investment program, the largest in the industry aimed at boosting manufacturing, research, and engineering. The Varennes site, already one of the world's largest HVDC transformer manufacturers, will add a new assembly line and flexible core and winding feeding lines to improve efficiency and production flow.

Officials said the expansion will address growing demand for electricity infrastructure, including renewable energy integration, data centers, electrified transportation, and heavy industries such as mining, aluminum, and steel. With its CSA N299 nuclear certification, the plant is also positioned to serve Canada's expanding nuclear and interconnection projects.

Government representatives welcomed the investment, citing its role in advancing Canada's clean energy transition and strengthening energy security.

The project is expected to generate significant regional benefits, with more than half of the facility's supply chain sourced within Quebec.
