Hitachi Energy to Build $457M Virginia Transformer Plant as Part of $1B U.S. Investment
Hitachi Energy, a subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd., has announced a landmark $1 billion investment to expand the production of critical electrical grid infrastructure in the United States.
A major part of this plan includes a $457 million state-of-the-art facility in South Boston, Virginia, which will manufacture large power transformers. The plant is expected to become the largest transformer production site in the U.S., creating over 825 new jobs in Southside Virginia.
The project is backed by the Trump administration's AI Action Plan, which aims to support rising energy demands from AI data centers, industrial sectors, and grid modernization efforts. This expansion is also supported by Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin, who announced plans for a 96-unit workforce housing project to accommodate the facility's future employees.
The South Boston site will be built next to Hitachi Energy's existing campus, and will play a key role in strengthening U.S. energy security, domestic manufacturing, and supply chain resilience.
The investment is part of Hitachi Energy's larger $9 billion global growth program, designed to meet the surging demand for reliable and sustainable power solutions amid AI-driven energy consumption.
