Hitachi Energy Opens Glasgow Engineering Hub

1 Jun 2026
Hitachi Energy has opened a new engineering centre in Glasgow, aimed at supporting upgrades to the United Kingdom’s electricity transmission and distribution networks and the integration of renewable energy sources.

The facility, described as a Centre of Excellence, is expected to create around 100 skilled roles, including engineers, project managers, and technical specialists. According to the company, a portion of these positions has already been filled as recruitment continues.

The centre will focus on engineering support for major grid infrastructure projects, including offshore wind integration, transmission reinforcement, and the deployment of high-voltage systems. It will also contribute to efforts to improve grid resilience as electricity demand and renewable generation increase across the UK.

The opening comes as the UK advances large-scale investment in its electricity infrastructure, with more than $103.3 billion (£77 billion) approved for grid development by 2031. Scotland is expected to play a significant role in this expansion due to its growing offshore wind capacity and its position as a key hub for renewable energy generation.

Hitachi Energy is involved in several UK transmission projects, including Eastern Green Link interconnectors and offshore wind connections such as Dogger Bank. The company also works with transmission operators including National Grid Electricity Transmission on high-voltage direct current (HVDC) systems used to transport electricity over long distances with reduced losses.
