Hitachi Energy Invests Over $100 Million to Upgrade Canadian Transformer Facilities

30 Apr 2024

Amidst the surge in demand for sustainable energy solutions across North America, Hitachi Energy has unveiled a significant investment exceeding $100 million to upgrade its power transformer facilities in Canada. This upgrade encompasses modernization efforts at its premier manufacturing location in Varennes, Quebec, as well as other facilities in Montreal. The Varennes site, serving as a vital hub for large power transformers in North America, is poised to play a pivotal role in supporting both national and regional power grids, as well as utility-scale renewable energy projects.

A key component of this upgrade initiative is the establishment of a new on-site transformer testing facility in Varennes, aimed at enhancing the certification process for power transformers manufactured at the site. Anticipated to be completed by the end of 2027, this facility underscores Hitachi Energy's commitment to meeting the burgeoning demand for sustainable energy solutions in Quebec and beyond. This initiative aligns seamlessly with Quebec's ambitious energy goals, including the imperative to substantially increase energy production to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

Bruno Melles, Managing Director of Business Unit Transformers at Hitachi Energy, highlighted the significance of these investments in meeting the evolving needs of customers across the globe. With demand for transformers and electrical equipment reaching unprecedented levels, Hitachi Energy's strategic investments underscore its commitment to supporting sectors such as renewable energy, data centers, and industrial electrification. As Hitachi Energy continues to expand its global footprint and manufacturing capacity, these initiatives are poised to drive advancements in the energy transition landscape, reinforcing Quebec's pivotal role in shaping the future of sustainable energy.
