Hitachi Energy Invests $30M in Ontario Transformer Refurbishment Facilities

17 Dec 2025
The Government of Ontario has announced a $30 million investment by Hitachi Energy to upgrade and expand transformer-related facilities in Stoney Creek and Cambridge, supporting 185 jobs and strengthening Canada’s domestic energy supply chain.

The investment will maintain 155 existing positions and create 30 new jobs as Hitachi Energy модерates a recently acquired facility in Stoney Creek. The site is Canada’s only facility dedicated to refurbishing medium and large power transformers - up to 765 kilovolts - a critical capability as electricity demand continues to rise across the province.

According to Stephen Lecce, Ontario’s Minister of Energy and Mines, the expansion aligns with the province’s Integrated Energy Plan, which prioritizes new transmission and generation infrastructure to support economic growth and long-term energy security.

In addition to the Stoney Creek upgrade, Hitachi Energy will acquire a new service facility in Cambridge that will function as the company’s national Field Service hub, providing on-site support for utilities and industrial customers across Canada.

Transformer refurbishment can reduce emissions by up to 70 percent compared with manufacturing new units, while helping utilities avoid extended outages caused by supply chain constraints. With limited facilities in Canada capable of servicing large transformers, the expansion improves grid resilience and reduces turnaround times.

The investment supports Ontario’s broader effort to expand electricity infrastructure, including plans to build up to 1,500 kilometres of new transmission lines to meet growing demand over the coming decades.
