Hitachi Energy Breaks Ground on Largest U.S. Large Power Transformer Plant
Hitachi Energy has initiated construction work on a major expansion of its South Boston campus in Virginia, advancing plans to establish what the company describes as the nation’s largest facility for the production of large power transformers. The project represents a $457 million investment and is expected to create about 825 long-term jobs in advanced manufacturing and operations.
The expansion takes place at an existing site where the company has operated since 1968 and currently employs around 850 people. Once completed, the new facility will nearly double the workforce and significantly increase production capacity for large power transformers, components that remain central to transmission expansion, generation integration, and rising demand from data centers and industrial loads.
The development forms part of a broader investment program exceeding $1 billion in U.S. grid equipment manufacturing. Within that framework, Virginia plays a central role as Hitachi Energy increases domestic production capabilities for critical grid infrastructure.
Local officials attended the groundbreaking ceremony, reflecting the project’s economic and industrial significance for the region. Governor Abigail Spanberger described the development as, “a monumental event for Southern Virginia and the entire Commonwealth,” adding that the investment and job creation will “accelerate the region’s economic trajectory while strengthening Virginia’s leadership in advanced manufacturing.”
Beyond production capacity, the expanded campus is being designed with additional employee-focused infrastructure, including fitness facilities, recreational courts, a health clinic, cafeteria, and shared spaces intended to support long-term workforce development.
According to Greg Callahan, Head of Hitachi Energy’s Transformer Business in North America, “every transformer that comes out of this facility is built by our skilled Virginia workforce, helping power communities across the country.”
Large power transformers manufactured at the site will supply utilities and industrial customers across the United States, reinforcing supply chain localization efforts in a segment where demand continues to rise alongside grid modernization requirements.
