Hitachi Energy Announces Semiconductor Expansion and HVDC Project Developments
Hitachi Energy announced two major developments in June 2026, reinforcing its position in power electronics and high-voltage direct current (HVDC) infrastructure for the global energy transition.
In Switzerland, Hitachi Energy is expanding production capacity for power semiconductors at its Lenzburg site. The company stated the investment will increase manufacturing of advanced semiconductor components used in high-voltage power modules, supporting applications such as renewable integration, grid stability, and industrial electrification. The expansion aligns with growing demand for efficient power conversion technologies in modern transformer and grid systems.
Separately, Hitachi Energy has been awarded a contract worth approximately $875 million (€770 million) by Terna and STEG for the Elmed HVDC interconnection project, which will link Europe and North Africa for the first time via a direct electricity connection between Italy and Tunisia. The project includes the construction of converter stations in Partanna (Italy) and Mlaabi (Tunisia), forming part of a 600 MW, 220 km submarine transmission system.
According to the announcement, the contract completes the procurement phase for the interconnection. The project is part of broader efforts to enhance cross-border grid stability and energy security, with funding support from the European Union through the Connecting Europe Facility.
The Elmed interconnection is expected to play a role in integrating renewable energy flows between regions and strengthening transmission infrastructure across the Euro-Mediterranean area.
