Hitachi Energy and HD Hyundai Electric Partner on HVDC Transformer Projects in Korea
Hitachi Energy, a global leader in electrification, and HD Hyundai Electric, a leading provider of electrical equipment, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore joint business opportunities in High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) projects, with a focus on transformers.
The agreement, signed at the Sweden-Korea Sustainable Partnership Summit, aims to accelerate Korea's energy transition by supporting President Lee's Energy Expressway initiative, designed to transmit power efficiently to factories and metropolitan areas.
As part of the collaboration, HD Hyundai Electric will leverage its new Ulsan factory, dedicated to producing HVDC transformers, while Hitachi Energy brings its 70-year legacy in HVDC technology. Together, the companies aim to deliver high-performance power solutions, enhance grid reliability, and integrate the country's rapidly growing renewable energy capacity.
Korea is targeting a fourfold increase in renewables to 120 gigawatts (GW) by 2038, making HVDC transformers critical for stable and efficient transmission over long distances. Hitachi Energy recently commissioned the Wando-Dongjeju #3 HVDC Converter Station, Korea's first Voltage Source Converter (VSC) installation, which connects Jeju Island to the mainland with a 200 MW HVDC link.
This marks the first formal collaboration between the two companies, combining Hitachi Energy's global experience with HD Hyundai Electric's local manufacturing capabilities, underscoring the strategic importance of HVDC transformers in Korea's clean energy transition.
