Hitachi Energy and Fingrid Sign Agreement for Seven 400 kV Power Transformers
Hitachi Energy and Fingrid have signed an agreement for the delivery of seven large 400 kV, 400 MVA power transformers to strengthen Finland’s transmission grid. The contract also includes an option for two additional units.
The transformers will be manufactured at Hitachi Energy Park, a new production and technology centre under construction in the Vaasa region. The facility is part of a $197 million (€170 million) investment aimed at significantly expanding transformer production capacity in Finland.
The agreement supports Fingrid’s long-term transmission network development programme, which foresees approximately $6 billion (€5.2 billion) in investments between 2026 and 2035 to enable electrification, increased electricity demand, and integration of clean energy.
Hitachi Energy Finland managing director Matti Vaattovaara said the contract represents an important milestone for the company’s new manufacturing capabilities:
“The deal is a great opening for our new transformer factory’s large power transformer production and an important step for both our company and Finland’s security of supply. Expanding our production to cover larger power transformers and reactors responds to our customers’ growing needs as the energy system undergoes a historic transformation driven by electrification.”
Fingrid vice president Timo Kiiveri emphasized the role of grid investments in enabling electrification and ensuring reliability:
“Our investments in the transmission grid are at a historically high level, and large transformers play a key role in enabling industrial electrification and customer connections. We are very pleased about Hitachi Energy’s investment in domestic transformer production in Vaasa. The deal also strengthens Finland’s security of supply and the reliability of supply chains.”
Deliveries are scheduled between 2029 and 2032 and will support substations across Finland, contributing to grid reliability and long-distance power transmission.
