Hitachi Energy and AusNet Power Up Victoria’s Largest Battery Project

26 Sep 2025
AusNet and Hitachi Energy have successfully delivered critical infrastructure for what will become Victoria's largest grid-scale battery, the Mortlake Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). The project is a key step in supporting Australia's transition to net-zero emissions by 2050.

Once operational, the Mortlake BESS will provide 300 MW / 650 MWh of energy storage capacity, enough to power approximately 135,000 homes. The system will help stabilize the grid by storing renewable energy during periods of low demand and releasing it during peak times.

At the heart of the infrastructure are two state-of-the-art 500 kV, 180 MVA transformers, supplied by Hitachi Energy. These units are engineered with advanced cooling, insulation, and TXpert™ digital monitoring to ensure high efficiency and long-term reliability under demanding conditions.

The transformers were delivered on a strict project timeline and are designed for cycling and dynamic loading, key for integrating renewable energy at scale. Their low-loss, high-performance design contributes to reduced emissions and enhanced grid resilience.

The Mortlake project builds on a previous 2024 collaboration between AusNet and Hitachi Energy on the Golden Plains Wind Farm, further cementing their role in Australia's clean energy transition.
