Hitachi ABB energizes NordLink

9 Dec 2020
Hitachi ABB Power Grids has announced the energization of the NordLink project, a 387 mile HVDC interconnection that links German and Norwegian power markets.

NordLink is an HVDC bi-pole installation performing at a level of 525 kV and 1,400 MW.
The manufacturer designed, engineered and supplied the two NordLink converter stations, located in Southern Norway and Northern Germany.
The converter stations have been delivered to a consortium of transmission system operators, Statnett and TenneT, and the state-owned German development bank, KfW.
The link is expected to deliver enough power to supply approximately 3.6 million homes in Germany and accelerate the shift towards renewable energy sources, enabling consumers across the region to benefit from sustainable energy.
Trial operations start in December 2020 and completion is planned for early 2021, the manufacturer said in a press release.
