Hitachi ABB Power Grids is providing its HVDC technology for National Grid's IFA2 HVDC electrical interconnector between Britain and France.
Spanning 149 miles along the sea bed, the 1,000-MW IFA2 HVDC interconnector enables Britain and France to share surplus clean electricity. The IFA2 power cable runs between Portsmouth, Britain and Caen, France.
By the end of its first year in operation, IFA2 is expected to reduce the amount of CO2 released into the atmosphere by 1.2 million tonnes.
The interconnector is now entering its energization test stage, the manufacturer said in a press release.
