Helix Electric Begins $60M Project to Modernise Transformers at LA County Facility

17 Sep 2025
Helix Electric Inc. has begun a $60 million project to modernise the Valencia Water Reclamation Plant, with transformer replacements forming a central part of the overhaul.

Commissioned by the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts, the project is designed to replace ageing power systems with modern, redundant equipment that will improve reliability and prevent service disruptions. Construction is scheduled to run through 2030.

Key upgrades include installing new transformers, a medium-voltage switchboard, and a third 2,500-kW emergency generator. In addition, outdated cables and low-voltage switchboards will be replaced to enhance the resilience of the facility's electrical backbone.

According to Mat Puckett, Operations Manager at Helix Electric Inc., replacing transformers in an ageing system requires extensive expertise in engineering and safety to ensure compliance and minimise downtime during construction.

The Valencia facility, which serves more than 200,000 people in the Santa Clarita Valley and processes up to 21.6 million gallons of wastewater daily, will benefit from reduced operating costs, greater efficiency, and long-term stability once the new systems are online.
