HD Hyundai Electric Produces 1,000th Transformer in the US
HD Hyundai Electric has produced its 1,000th transformer at its North American manufacturing facility in Alabama, marking a major production milestone for the company’s US operations.
The milestone unit is a 500 kV, 675 MVA ultra-high-voltage transformer that will be delivered to Georgia Transmission and installed in Walton County, Florida, to support electricity transmission infrastructure.
Over the past 15 years, the Alabama facility has manufactured transformers with a combined capacity of approximately 200 GVA. The company said its annual production capacity has increased from 11 units during the early years of operation to 105 units following continued investment in manufacturing facilities.
HD Hyundai Electric established its North American production corporation in 2011 as part of its strategy to expand local manufacturing capabilities. The company is now developing a second plant in Alabama, which is expected to be completed in April 2027. The expansion is planned to increase production capacity by approximately 50% and enable manufacturing of transformers up to the 765 kV class.
At the commemorative event, Kim Young-ki, President of HD Hyundai Electric, said, “The production of the 1,000th transformer is a meaningful achievement created by the technological prowess of our executives and employees and the trust of our customers.” He added that the company would continue developing the Alabama facility to respond to increasing demand for power infrastructure in North America.
The expansion comes as utilities and grid operators in North America continue investing in transmission infrastructure, driven by electricity demand growth and the need to modernize aging power networks.
