HD Hyundai Electric Develops 460 MVA Eco-Friendly Transformer

16 Apr 2026
HD Hyundai Electric has completed final approval testing for a 400-kilovolt, 460-megavolt-ampere eco-friendly transformer, the largest capacity unit of its kind built in South Korea.

The unit will be supplied to a substation operated by the National Grid in the United Kingdom. It uses synthetic ester insulating oil instead of conventional mineral oil, aiming to reduce fire risk and environmental impact in the event of leakage. The biodegradable insulating fluid also has a higher ignition point, making it suitable for urban infrastructure, renewable energy facilities, and other sensitive installations.

The development of eco-friendly transformers requires specialized engineering due to differing thermal behavior and insulation characteristics compared with mineral oil-based systems. These challenges become more complex in high-voltage, large-capacity equipment where heat management and electrical insulation must be precisely controlled.

Industry forecasts from Grand View Research indicate that the global market for eco-friendly transformers is expected to grow from USD 1.22 billion in 2024 to USD 1.81 billion by 2030, reflecting a compound annual growth rate of 6.9 percent.

A company official said high-capacity eco-friendly transformers are technology-intensive products requiring advanced insulation and cooling capabilities, adding that the company intends to expand its presence in the segment through continued research and development.
