Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has announced plans to upgrade a power transformer at its Afienya Substation in the Greater Accra Region, a move aimed at increasing electricity capacity and improving grid reliability.

In a press statement issued in Tema, GRIDCo said the upgrade will begin on February 3, 2026, and is expected to last about five weeks. The project will involve replacing an existing 50/66 megavolt-ampere (MVA) transformer with a higher-capacity 120/145 MVA transformer.

According to GRIDCo, the upgrade is part of broader efforts to strengthen electricity transmission infrastructure and support rising demand in the area. “The upgrade forms part of ongoing infrastructure improvement measures aimed at strengthening the national electricity transmission network,” the company said.

The new transformer is expected to increase the operational capacity of the Afienya Substation, enabling it to serve more customers while improving the reliability of power supply to homes, businesses, and surrounding communities.

GRIDCo assured customers that the works will not result in power outages. The company said engineers are working in collaboration with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and have put contingency measures in place to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply throughout the upgrade period.

GRIDCo is responsible for the transmission and economic dispatch of electricity from power generation facilities to bulk customers and distribution utilities across Ghana and parts of West Africa.
