Grand Rapids Community College Launches Energy Trades Pathway Program

17 Jul 2023

Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC) is partnering with the Michigan Energy Workforce Development Consortium (MEWDC) to offer a new certificate program aimed at providing students with in-demand job opportunities in the energy industry, including power transformers. The Energy Trades Pathway Program, set to begin in Fall 2023, is a one-year credential program created in collaboration with industry partners, including Consumers Energy, DTE, Holland Board of Public Works, InfraSource, and Lewis Tree Service.

Recognizing the growing job openings and upcoming retirements in the energy sector, GRCC developed the program to create a pathway for students to pursue careers in various energy-related fields, such as gas operations, heavy equipment operation, electric operations, line clearance tree trimming, and power transformers. Starting wages for these positions range from $18 to $42 per hour.

The program's curriculum includes practical labs and hands-on training in areas such as basic electricity, project management, and endurance training. Students will also have the opportunity to work with transformers commonly found in the electrical field. The program aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the energy industry and prepare them for successful careers.

By partnering with MEWDC and industry professionals, GRCC's Energy Trades Pathway Program ensures that students receive real-world experience and knowledge directly applicable to the field. The program also offers networking opportunities, with executives and trades workers visiting the classroom to share their experiences and provide guidance.

The partnership between GRCC and MEWDC aims to bridge the gap between education and industry needs, equipping students with the skills necessary to excel in the energy industry, including power transformer-related roles.
