Government of Canada Supports Hitachi Energy with $30 Million Funding

16 Jul 2024
The Government of Canada has announced a $30 million (CAD) investment in Hitachi Energy to support the creation of a new HVDC simulation center in Montreal and the modernization of its power transformer factory in Varennes, Quebec. This funding is part of a broader $140 million (CAD) initiative, including contributions from Investissement Quebec, aimed at enhancing Hitachi Energy's capabilities in accelerating the clean energy transition.

The new HVDC simulation center, expected to be completed by 2027, will employ virtual testing of HVDC systems to expedite the deployment of large transmission projects. This facility will provide a digital representation of HVDC control and protection systems, supporting collaboration with local and international customers.

The Varennes factory, Hitachi Energy's premier manufacturing location for large power transformers in North America, will benefit from a new onsite transformer testing facility. This upgrade will enhance the factory's capacity to meet the growing demand for sustainable energy solutions across the region.

François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, emphasized the investment's role in enabling a stronger, greener economy. Carla Vicente, Country Managing Director of Hitachi Energy Canada, highlighted Quebec's importance as a hub for the clean energy transition in North America.

Hitachi Energy employs over 550 engineers and skilled manufacturing employees in Canada across its three facilities in Varennes, Montreal, and Quebec City, with more than 1,100 employees nationwide.
