Göteborg Energi selects MIDEL fluid for underground transformers in Sweden

4 Mar 2022

SWEDEN - Göteborg Energi has selected MIDEL's biodegradable synthetic ester dielectric liquid for its underground power transformers to ensure fire safety.

Since Vattenfall installed their first 151 kV power transformer filled with MIDEL's ester-based fluid in 2002, other Swedish utilities started to take up the biodegradable option, in order to improve fire safety and reduce environmental impact, MIDEL said in a press release.

Among the utilities switching to MIDEL was Göteborg Energi who are responsible for the larger Göteborg region of Sweden. This region uses over 50 power transformers (40 MVA and larger) and more than 2,000 distribution transformers of 630 kVA and larger rating.

Göteborg Energi has a number of rock stations where the main transformers are housed underground. There are typically three transformers in each rock station, with at least two online at any one time. The utility selected MIDEL's biodegradable synthetic ester dielectric liquid for the units to ensure fire safety.

From the outset of the project, the M&I team were involved to provide advice on the use of MIDEL ester-based fluid. During the development phase, both the MIDEL technical and commercial teams provided support to the transformer OEM, Končar Power Transformers Ltd. - A Joint Venture of Siemens Energy and Končar. This included providing support on topics such as correct handling of the fluid, as well as electrical and thermal characteristics, the manufacturer said in a press release.

MIDEL fluids are manufactured by M&I Materials in the United Kingdom, the United States, and South Africa.
