Glasgow’s Energy Backbone Strengthened by $5.6m Substation Upgrade
A major electricity substation in Glasgow's West End has undergone a $5.6 million upgrade to meet the city's growing energy demands.
The Partick Meadow 132/33kV substation, which has been in operation since the early 1900s, has been modernised by SP Energy Networks as part of a wider effort to strengthen the city's electricity infrastructure.
The project included replacing ageing equipment to improve efficiency and reliability. A significant part of the redevelopment was the demolition of the old control building, freeing up space for additional transformer installations. This will allow the site to expand its capacity as demand for electricity continues to rise.
According to Alfonso Blanco Suarez, Project Manager at SP Energy Networks, the investment ensures the substation can continue to support the community well into the future, particularly as more households adopt low-carbon technologies such as electric vehicles and heat pumps.
Electricity demand in Glasgow is projected to double by 2050, and infrastructure projects such as this are seen as vital to ensuring a resilient and sustainable energy network for the city's future.
