Ghana to Deploy 1,500 Transformers Nationwide to Stabilise Power Supply
The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has announced plans to deploy approximately 1,500 new transformers nationwide by the end of March to stabilise electricity supply. The move aims to improve the reliability of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) network and address frequent power fluctuations reported across the country.
During the launch of ECG’s new corporate strategy in Accra, Minister John Abdulai Jinapor said the government intervened in the procurement after ECG indicated it might lack the financial capacity to fully fund the acquisition. The minister highlighted that reliable electricity remains a top priority for consumers, particularly amid rising tariffs.
The deployment will include the replacement of ageing equipment to strengthen the national grid. Julius Kpekpena, acting managing director of ECG, described the new corporate strategy as a roadmap to enhance operational efficiency, improve revenue mobilisation, and modernise service delivery through increased technology use.
The reforms also aim to tackle longstanding challenges such as illegal connections and power theft, which have affected ECG’s financial and operational stability. Together, the transformer rollout and strategic reforms are part of broader efforts to enhance electricity distribution and ensure more stable supply for households and businesses nationwide.
