German ABB Plant Reduces Emissions with Solar, Electrification, and Transformers

5 Feb 2026
ABB’s manufacturing site in Sasbach, Germany has achieved nearly 3,800 tons of CO₂ reductions through renewable electricity, on-site energy efficiency measures, electrification upgrades, and enhanced energy management.

Of the total savings, approximately 2,700 tons come from certified renewable electricity purchased from the grid, while on-site measures contribute around 1,086 tons annually. Expanded solar generation accounts for about 550 tons of CO₂ savings, with 3,410 photovoltaic modules producing roughly 1,500 megawatt-hours of electricity per year—enough to power an estimated 400 homes.

A newly installed transformer station plays a central role in the facility’s energy strategy, enabling stable and efficient integration of both on-site solar power and grid electricity into the site’s production systems. This infrastructure supports operational stability and reduces exposure to energy price fluctuations.

Other efficiency measures include a new powder-coating facility with heat recovery, full LED lighting, building automation via the ABB i-bus® KNX system, waste heat recovery, and optimized process controls. Twenty-one electric vehicle charging stations support low-emission mobility for staff and visitors.

The facility has also adopted digital energy management to monitor electricity use in real time and enable continuous operational improvements. Future plans include battery storage to capture excess solar energy, replacing gas-based heating with electric heat pumps, and exploring on-site wind generation.

The Sasbach site is part of ABB’s Mission to Zero™ program, which now includes 37 sites worldwide and reports over 60,000 tons of CO₂ reductions annually.
