Georgia Power confirms transformer fire after reports of explosion

7 Sep 2020
ATLANTA, GEORGIA - Georgia Power confirmed that early Monday its crews responded to a transformer fire at a power plant in Cobb County, just outside Atlanta, after early reports of a large explosion at the facility.

The utility managed to contain the fire within the substation at Plant McDonough. There were no reported injuries, reports Fox News.
The fire sent large plumes of smoke in the air. Nearby residents said there were four explosions in total.
The plant, which is part of Georgia Power, has three natural gas units that can supply enough energy to power about 1.7 million homes, according to the electric utility company.
