GE Vernova and SWI Collaborate on Advanced Substation Monitoring Solutions

28 Aug 2024
GE Vernova and Systems With Intelligence (SWI) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) at the CIGRE event in Paris to develop advanced substation monitoring solutions. This collaboration aims to integrate various technologies, such as gas sensing, bushing monitoring, and infrared thermography, alongside artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), to enhance grid asset management.

The partnership will initially focus on substation monitoring, combining SWI's infrared thermography and touchless monitoring systems with GE Vernova's expertise in monitoring and diagnostics for grid assets. This integration is expected to streamline utilities' and transmission system operators' monitoring efforts, allowing for earlier issue detection and promoting a more reliable, efficient, and stable power grid.

Graham McGuigan, Product Line Leader for Monitoring & Diagnostics at GE Vernova, emphasized that the collaboration aims to unify data streams from various sensing devices into a cohesive monitoring system. Angelo Rizzo, President and CEO of SWI, highlighted the potential for enhanced diagnostic intelligence and a simplified user experience through this partnership.

The first outcome of this collaboration will be the integration of SWI's infrared sensors into GE Vernova's DGA 900 Plus system, a transformer monitoring solution. This enhanced system is expected to be available commercially in early 2025. Future plans include expanding the integration to incorporate SWI's pan/tilt infrared sensors within GE Vernova's GridBeats™ Asset Vision substation monitoring solution.
