FPL installs new underground transmission line to service Miami

25 Oct 2021

MIAMI, FLORIDA -- Thanks to pre-existing underground infrastructure, it should be possible to connect the new transmission line with current equipment, thus minimising the cost for the city.

Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) have announced that they have begun working on a new underground transmission power line that is intended to provide energy and improve reliability in downtown Miami and the surrounding area.

Joint venture between FPL and the City of Miami, once finished, will stretch along the Metrorail corridor from FPL's Coconut Grove Substation to around the Simpson Substation in the Brickell neighborhood. A new substation, dubbed Dolphin, is also scheduled to be built along this line for additional grid stability.

"We are excited to work with the City of Miami on this new underground transmission line that will help us further strengthen and enhance our system and provide reliable service for our customers for years to come," said Manny Miranda, FPL senior vice president of power delivery.

Since there is already ample underground electric infrastructure along this route, FPL say they should be able to link to existing equipment, which would cut down some of the potential project costs for the city.

"Miami - and specifically our Downtown - continues to see incredible growth in terms of new residents, new businesses, and new development. We welcome FPL's timely investment in fortifying our power supply and doing so in a way that has the least possible impact on our neighborhoods," said Mayor Francis Suarez.

The construction is expected to befinished by Decembre 2023.
