FortisBC Invests $18.6M to Upgrade Kelowna’s Saucier Substation
FortisBC has begun work on a multi-year project to upgrade the Saucier Substation, which supplies electricity to south-central and downtown Kelowna, including Kelowna General Hospital.
The utility provider is investing $18.6 million to improve the substation's capacity, ensuring reliable power during peak demand periods in extreme weather. The project includes adding a second transformer, expanding the substation's control building, installing a new access gate and entrance on Richter Street, and replacing switchgear and breakers.
Ryan Smith, divisional director of planning and development services for the City of Kelowna, commented, "The City greatly appreciates FortisBC's investment and looks forward to continued collaboration to accelerate infrastructure in rapidly growing areas."
Located at 822 Saucier Ave., the substation upgrade is expected to be completed by the end of 2027. Rising electricity demand in Kelowna has been driven by population growth, the adoption of electric vehicles, and increased use of heat pumps. Over the past five years, FortisBC has added more than 10,000 new electricity customers in the region.
The project highlights ongoing infrastructure investment to support Kelowna's growing energy needs and maintain reliable electricity service for residential, commercial, and critical facilities.
