Fortescue plans 500/132kV transformer station for Argentina wind project
Fortescue Future Industries (FFI) is advancing a 300MW wind project in Argentina's RÃo Negro province, which could eventually supply electricity for green hydrogen production. The company has requested grid access through transmission firm Transener and is seeking a new 500/132kV transformer station to integrate the wind park into the wholesale power market.
The Cerro PolicÃa project has secured 300MW of transmission priority dispatch capacity, allowing Fortescue to supply renewable electricity to corporate power purchase agreements or, in the future, to a green hydrogen plant. Annual production is estimated at 1,300,000 MWh, supporting Argentina's industrial development with clean energy.
A certificate of public need and convenience has been requested to trigger public investment in the necessary grid infrastructure, including the transformer station. FFI also established a local entity, EnergÃa Comahue, to manage its energy ventures under Argentina's Rigi investment incentives regime.
The project has already received environmental authorization from provincial authorities, and initial commitments to dispatch capacity are scheduled for 88MW in December 2026 and 212MW in March 2027, according to Cammesa, the wholesale power market administrator.
