FirstEnergy to Upgrade Ohio Transformers and Substations
FirstEnergy will invest nearly $800 million in Ohio’s electrical grid, with a focus on upgrading transformers and substations.
The utility plans to spend about $294 million building a new substation in Clark County, where two major power lines intersect. The project includes installing new transformers, replacing breakers, and upgrading high-voltage lines in several northern Ohio counties.
Through Grid Growth Ventures, a joint venture with Transource Energy, FirstEnergy will also invest approximately $490 million in nearly 200 miles of high-voltage transmission lines to support electricity delivery in the Columbus region.
FirstEnergy said the upgrades are intended to improve the movement of electricity across the grid and reduce the risk of outages. The announcement coincides with the company requesting regulatory approval for more time to restore power after outages and permission for additional outages per year than current standards allow.
