FirstEnergy Launches New Substation in South Annville Township to Support Expanding Industrial Hub

10 Dec 2024
A new substation is under construction in South Annville Township to enhance electricity supply for growing warehouse facilities in the area. FirstEnergy Pennsylvania Electric Company announced the project on Monday, highlighting its role in supporting the region's industrial expansion.

The substation, located off Route 422, will link to the local power network through new distribution lines, improving service reliability for over 2,100 Met-Ed customers in Annville, South Annville Township, and Palmyra. The infrastructure will also provide a backup power source to ensure consistent service during outages or maintenance.

"This substation will provide critical infrastructure for a significant shipping hub in the busy motor freight corridor near Interstates 78 and 81," said John Hawkins, FirstEnergy's President, Pennsylvania.

Construction began in spring 2024 and is slated for completion by early 2025. Crews have already installed key substation components, with the 69-kilovolt-to-13.2-kilovolt transformer, weighing over 100,000 pounds, scheduled for delivery this December.

Two initial power lines will serve the Eagle Point Logistics Center and a new warehouse at the Clear Springs Logistics Park, with future plans for additional lines. Additionally, a new 69-kilovolt transmission line, supported by 16 steel poles, will connect the substation to an existing power source.

Met-Ed serves approximately 592,000 customers across eastern and southeastern Pennsylvania, including the rapidly expanding Annville area.
