FirstEnergy installs first new transformer as part of Lakewood grid upgrade
FirstEnergy has installed the first of two new power transformers at its Lakewood Substation in Ohio as part of an ongoing effort to improve electric reliability for customers in Lakewood and West Cleveland. The utility said the project is intended to strengthen the local grid and reduce outage durations for nearly 11,000 customers.
The approximately 55-ton transformer was transported from Roanoke, Virginia, and placed at the substation using a crane. A second transformer is scheduled for delivery later this summer. According to the company, each unit represents an investment of about $1.85 million, including transportation and installation.
Torrence Hinton, president of FirstEnergy Ohio, described the installation as "an important step in building a stronger, more resilient electric system for Lakewood," adding that the investments are intended to improve reliability and support the community's future electricity needs.
The transformer installation is part of a broader reliability program that also includes replacing substation breakers, upgrading neighborhood equipment, installing smart meters and carrying out proactive tree trimming. FirstEnergy reported that recent improvements have contributed to shorter outage durations in the area, with additional benefits expected once both new transformers are energized later this year.
The utility plans to keep a mobile substation in service while installation work continues until the new equipment is fully operational.
