First Transformer Completed in SSEN Upgrade

26 Sep 2024
Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) has successfully completed the design and build phase of the first transformer in its £8m upgrade project aimed at improving power supply resilience for 7,500 homes and businesses in Southampton. Just four months into the project, the first section of the newly upgraded North Baddesley infrastructure is set to be energised.

The project, in partnership with Freedom Group of Companies Ltd, includes the design and installation of a second transformer, alongside burying five kilometers of overhead lines between North Baddesley and Rownham. These upgrades are essential for ensuring a robust, future-ready network capable of supporting low-carbon technologies, including electric vehicles and heat pumps.

Lewis Stimpson, SSEN's Senior Project Manager, emphasized the importance of the transformers, stating that they will create a more resilient power supply, better suited to withstand adverse weather and support net-zero efforts. The work is scheduled for completion in June 2025.
