First of three transformer parts delivered to Nauders substation

12 Sep 2022

AUSTRIA - The transformer will increase APG's transmission capacity and thus contribute to the secure power supply of Austria and the region.

Austrian Power Grid (APG) has announced that the first of three transformer parts, with a transport weight of around 155 tons (347.200 pounds), was delivered to the new Nauders substation.

According to APG, the transport started in Weiz, Styria, from where it went by train to Landeck. After a multi-hour journey divided into two days, the so-called transformer leg finally reached the Nauders UW. Then, it was carefully unloaded from the transporter, placed on special rails with millimeter precision and finally pulled onto its foundation. Two more transformer parts transports are planned to be completed by 20 September, after which the 380/220 kV transformer will be completed. In October, two additional 220 kV phase shifter transformers weighing several tons and a 220 kV oil choke will be transported to the substation.

"Fully installed and upgraded, the total weight of the transformer is around 740 tons," explains UW-Nauders project manager Karl Scheibenhofer: "With its output of 480 megavolt amperes, it will increase APG's transmission capacity and thus contribute to the secure power supply of Austria and the region."

In the long term, this project should also enable additional grid support for Tinetz-Tiroler Netze GmbH through appropriate space reserves.
