Final Transformer Installed in Dagenham’s £4m Power Project

25 Sep 2025
A major electricity infrastructure upgrade in Dagenham is nearing completion, promising improved power supply for thousands of residents.

UK Power Networks has installed three new 26-tonne electricity transformers at its substation in the Dagenham Dock area as part of a £4 million investment. The project is set to nearly double the substation's capacity, with the final transformer expected to go live by the end of September.

According to Mark Bacon, project manager at UK Power Networks, the new infrastructure will support the region's growing demand for electricity and low-carbon technologies.

"This investment project will deliver long-lasting benefits in the area and support growth in demand for electric vehicle chargers, heat pumps, and more low carbon technologies connecting to the electricity network," Bacon said.

The upgrade is designed to enhance capacity and improve reliability for approximately 3,000 homes, while also reducing operational noise through the use of quieter transformers.

This work is part of UK Power Networks' wider initiative to modernise the grid infrastructure across London, the East, and the South East of England, serving around 20 million people.
