Final Construction Works Finished at Buronga Substation, Australia

16 Apr 2025
The Buronga Substation, part of Project EnergyConnect, has completed all mechanical and electrical construction works. It marks a major step in Australia's largest power transmission project.

Spanning 15 hectares, the site includes 24,000 m³ of concrete, 1,800 piles, and 420 km of low-voltage cable. The facility supports advanced systems including Synchronous Condensers and Phase Shifting Transformers, designed to regulate power flow across the grid.

Commissioning and testing are now underway. Once online, the substation will help increase transmission capacity to 800 MVA between New South Wales, South Australia, and Victoria.

The first transmission began last year, with 150 MW flowing through newly completed 330kV and 220kV lines. The second circuit is now in place to support full capacity.

Global subcontractors ANDRITZ and Hyosung, along with Australian partners, played key roles in delivery. The project reports no major injuries to date--a notable achievement given the scale and complexity of the work.
