Eugene’s Largest Substation Nears Completion After Extensive Rebuild

18 Jul 2024
The Eugene Water and Electric Board's (EWEB) largest substation, the Currin substation, is nearing completion following over a year of intensive construction. This project is part of EWEB's decade-long initiative to replace and upgrade ten substations, aimed at modernizing the electric grid.

The Currin substation was taken offline in November 2022 due to multiple failures caused by age, environmental factors, and inadequate earthquake resistance. Philip Peterson, a Senior Engineer with EWEB, stated that the new improvements will significantly enhance the substation's reliability.

The $16.1-million project is crucial for increasing power capacity and ensuring the overall reliability of the electric grid by preventing outages due to equipment failure. Testing of the substation is scheduled to begin in August, with full operational status expected by October.
