Eskom Appoints Transformer Suppliers for Strategic Transmission Expansion

25 Jun 2024
Eskom has announced the appointment of key transformer suppliers as part of its Transmission Development Plan. This strategic move is aligned with the company's commitment to connect new generation capacity and support a renewed focus on localization.

The newly appointed suppliers include SGB-SMIT POWER MATLA, ACTOM, Powertech Transformers, TMC Transformers, and Hitachi Energy South Africa. These companies will play a crucial role in Eskom's ambitious project to bolster its transmission infrastructure, ensuring the reliable delivery of electricity to meet South Africa's growing energy demands.

Group Executive for Transmission, Segomoco Scheppers, emphasized the importance of this initiative. "Transformers are integral to our transmission network. Collaborating with these suppliers underscores our commitment to enhancing the grid's reliability and efficiency while fostering local industry participation."

This move comes at a critical time as South Africa faces energy supply challenges. By enhancing its transmission network, Eskom aims to facilitate the integration of new power generation sources, including renewable energy projects, thereby supporting the country's broader energy transition goals.

The decision to involve multiple suppliers highlights Eskom's strategy to diversify its supply chain, mitigate risks, and ensure timely project execution. This approach is also expected to stimulate local economic growth and job creation, aligning with government policies promoting industrial development.

As Eskom progresses with its Transmission Development Plan, the newly appointed suppliers will commence the production and delivery of transformers, marking a significant step towards a more robust and resilient power grid for South Africa.
