ESB Networks Expands Grid Capacity with New Transformer Upgrade
ESB Networks has completed the installation of the first of two new 18.75 MVA transformers at its Dock Road 38 kV Station in Limerick, Ireland, marking a key milestone in a network reinforcement project aimed at supporting growing electricity demand in the region.
Once fully commissioned, the upgrade will deliver 27.5 MVA of additional capacity, enabling residential, commercial, and industrial development across Limerick city. The reinforcement is expected to support electricity demand equivalent to approximately 7,000 homes, including increased electrification of heating and transport.
According to Alan Rossiter, Head of Strategy & Network Development at ESB Networks, the project is a targeted investment in regional growth and electrification. He said:
“This investment at the Dock Road 38 kV Station is a key step in supporting Limerick’s continued growth, helping to accelerate the capacity needed for new homes, businesses, and future development across this growing region.”
He added that network upgrades are essential to balancing near-term demand with Ireland’s long-term energy transition goals:
“Through targeted strategic interventions ESB Networks is working to ensure the electricity network can keep pace with Limerick’s housing needs while also supporting Ireland’s transition to a low-carbon future.”
The upgrade is part of ESB Networks’ broader Price Review 6 investment programme, which focuses on strengthening electricity infrastructure nationwide to support housing growth and climate targets.
The company noted that optimising existing assets also plays a key role in enabling low-carbon technologies such as heat pumps and electric vehicles, while maintaining reliability for existing customers.
