EPEC Launches Argentina’s First Clean GIS Transformer Station in Córdoba
Empresa Provincial de Energía de Córdoba (EPEC) announced plans to construct the country’s first Clean GIS-type Transformer Station in Los Espinillos, aiming to enhance the electrical system for the Calamuchita Valley and surrounding areas.
The project, awarded under Public Tender No. 5541, will be executed by a consortium of ITEM SA, Estructuras SA, and Electroingeniería ICSSA. The infrastructure will serve more than 100,000 residents across the departments of Calamuchita and Santa María, including towns such as Los Espinillos, La Cumbrecita, Villa General Belgrano, and Potrero de Garay.
The new 132/33/13.2 kV – 2x40/55 MVA substation will feature Siemens Energy GIS switching equipment, which uses compressed “clean air” instead of SF6, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The station’s compact design minimizes land use and visual impact, while improving reliability and reducing maintenance requirements.
The project includes a heating system for the 132 kV overhead line connecting the substation to the La Viña Plant, preventing ice accumulation during winter. Complementary works include additional medium-voltage substations and a 132 kV double-circuit line to the Los Molinos substation.
The total investment exceeds $38.6 billion pesos, with completion scheduled for the end of 2027. EPEC emphasizes that the project aligns with the provincial greenhouse gas reduction program, requiring the consortium to calculate and offset 100% of emissions during construction.
Governor Martín Llaryora and EPEC President Claudio Puértolas highlighted the project’s dual role in strengthening infrastructure and protecting the environment while supporting regional development and tourism.
