Entire Nation Loses Power After Monkey ‘Comes Into Contact With Transformer

10 Feb 2025
Sri Lanka is currently facing widespread blackouts after a monkey disrupted the national power grid, causing a massive power outage. The incident occurred at a substation south of Colombo, the country's capital, at around 11am local time on Sunday. According to Sri Lanka's Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody, the power failure was triggered when the monkey came into contact with a grid transformer, creating an imbalance in the system.

The Ceylon Electricity Board confirmed that the disruption was caused by an "emergency" at the substation, and power outages were reported across the island. While efforts are underway to restore power, essential services like hospitals and water purification plants are relying on backup generators. Some regions have seen power return within hours, while other parts of the country continue to face blackouts.

The incident has raised concerns about the fragility of Sri Lanka's power infrastructure, with engineers warning that the national grid is in a weakened state. An anonymous senior engineer expressed concerns to local news outlets, stating that the grid is vulnerable to frequent outages if disturbances occur.

Critics have urged the government to prioritize infrastructure upgrades to prevent such disruptions in the future.
