Entergy to replace Damaged Transformer after French Quarter Explosion
Entergy is preparing to replace the underground transformer that exploded and caught fire near Conti and Bourbon streets in the French Quarter, with repair work expected to continue into next week.
The explosion occurred around 10:36 p.m. on Saturday, triggering a roadway fire that temporarily knocked out power to approximately 900 customers during the busy Essence Festival weekend. Parts of the French Quarter were evacuated, including guests at the Royal Sonesta Hotel, while additional police patrols were deployed in the area as a precaution.
A large crane has been positioned to remove the damaged transformer, while two replacement units are already on site. The transformer remains in the underground vault where it caught fire, with scorch marks still visible on the surrounding concrete.
Entergy said engineers are "working around the clock to expedite the work at Conti and Bourbon. We anticipate being able to lift most street closures by the end of the day on Thursday of this week. Repair work is expected to continue through the end of next week in the underground vault. Some barricades will remain in place to protect the safety of our crew."
