Energa-Operator, part of the Orlen Group, has secured $1.8bn (7.5bn zlotys) to modernise the power grid in northern and central Poland. The investment is part of a broader initiative to enhance Poland's energy security and lower costs for consumers.

The plan includes upgrading and building 21,000 km of the grid, with a focus on integrating renewable energy sources. A key aspect of the project is the installation of 1,000 advanced transformers and voltage control elements to improve the distribution of renewable energy, ensuring more reliable and efficient power delivery. This will also support Poland's transition away from fossil fuels by connecting 9GW of renewable energy, alongside energy storage facilities, to the network.

The programme is designed to enhance system stability and support the growing number of prosumers -- individuals who both produce and consume energy. It is expected to improve grid reliability for 3.5 million customers, while enabling the construction of new power lines, cables, and public vehicle charging stations across the country.

Ireneusz FÄ...fara, President of the Orlen Group, stated that the project will play a critical role in strengthening Poland's energy infrastructure and supporting its economic development, particularly in energy-intensive regions such as Pruszcz GdaÅ„ski, SÅ‚upsk, and Koszalin.
