EirGrid Installs Key Transformers for Ireland-France Subsea Link

20 Nov 2025

EirGrid has completed the delivery and installation of four large-scale power transformers for its Celtic Interconnector project, a subsea link that will connect the electricity grids of Ireland and France.

Each transformer weighs 240 tonnes and was shipped from Rotterdam, Netherlands to Aghada Power Station in Cork, before being transported to the project’s converter station near Carrigtwohill. Specialized vehicles, measuring 94 metres long, were used for the move.

The transformers will regulate voltage levels at the converter station, enabling the interconnector to link with Ireland’s national grid. The project is co-financed by the Connecting Europe Facility of the European Union and, when operational, will allow the exchange of up to 700 MW of electricity, enough to power approximately 450,000 homes.

Michael Behan, EirGrid’s Chief Financial Officer, highlighted the complex logistics of the transport, acknowledging the collaboration between contractors, stakeholders, local authorities, and An Garda Siochána to ensure public safety.

The delivery of the transformers marks a key milestone in the Celtic Interconnector project, which is seen as a strategic step in strengthening Ireland’s electricity network and supporting cross-border energy trade with France.
