Egypt Targets Local Manufacturing of High-Voltage Transformers with Chinese Firms
Egypt is seeking to localise the manufacturing of high- and extra-high-voltage transformers through expanded cooperation with Chinese companies, following discussions held during an official visit to China by Mahmoud Essmat, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy.
The talks focused on establishing transformer production lines in Egypt, including oil-filled extra-high-voltage transformers, gas-insulated transformer systems, and integrated smart transformer units designed for modern electricity networks. Meetings brought together Mahmoud Essmat with executives from Ancora Group, Guitang Group, Hongji Group, and companies specialising in smart electrical equipment, grid technologies, and energy infrastructure.
Discussions also covered the localisation of gas-insulated switchgear, fully insulated smart substations, and transformer-supporting systems that improve grid safety, reduce technical losses, and extend operational lifespans. According to the ministry, these advanced technologies are well suited to harsh environmental conditions and high-demand transmission networks.
The transformer localisation initiative forms part of a broader strategy to modernise Egypt’s unified electricity grid, increase the local content of energy infrastructure projects, and support the integration of renewable energy across all voltage levels.
Essmat highlighted Egypt’s large domestic market and regional export potential, supported by existing electricity interconnections and trade agreements. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to prioritising locally manufactured transformers and grid equipment in national power projects and to supporting partnerships with private-sector investors.
