Egypt and AMEA Power to Build Energy Storage and Transformer Stations to Boost Grid Stability

26 Feb 2025
Egypt has signed an agreement with AMEA Power to develop two large-scale energy storage stations and construct new transformer stations, the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy announced on February 23rd. The initiative is a key step in strengthening grid stability and expanding renewable energy integration.

The project includes two battery energy storage systems (BESS): one in Benban (500 MWh) and another in Zaafarana (1,000 MWh). These will be supported by newly built transformer stations, which will ensure efficient power transmission and optimize renewable energy use during peak hours.

Minister of Electricity Mahmoud Esmat emphasized that transformers play a crucial role in stabilizing the grid, managing electricity flow, and reducing power losses. The project, coordinated with the New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA), is part of Egypt's strategy to cut fossil fuel consumption and increase clean energy reliance.

By reinforcing the transformer infrastructure, Egypt aims to support its ambitious energy targets--42% renewable energy by 2030 and 65% by 2040, in line with Egypt Vision 2030 and the National Energy Strategy.
