Empresa Distribuidora de Electricidad del Este (Edeeste), the largest distributor in the Dominican Republic's electricity system, is investing US$ 31 million (RD$920 million) to bolster its energy infrastructure and meet the surging demand within its concession area. At a recent press conference held at Edeeste's headquarters in Megacentro, Manuel Alberto Mejía Naut, the interim general manager, disclosed plans to install eight power transformers and six substations by May of this year.

The strategic initiative is a direct response to the escalating demand for energy in the province of Santo Domingo Este, where a remarkable 12% growth was observed in 2023. Naut emphasized the need to address direct connections and combat illegal transformers in farms, factories, and industries, signaling a firm stance against energy theft.

Edeeste's comprehensive plan includes the launch of a Customer Monitoring Center next week and a VIP or premium customer project later this month. This customer-centric approach aims to streamline services, ensuring that premium clients receive personalized attention and avoid service interruptions due to arrears.

With a keen eye on the future, Naut highlighted the unusual energy demand spike, projecting a doubling by 2027. The plan involves an increase in renewable energy, currently constituting 5.9% of the energy served, to fortify the system and prevent a collapse. Edeeste's commitment to addressing neglected infrastructure and improving outdated systems underscores a significant step toward a more reliable and sustainable electricity network.

In the face of challenges, including overloaded transformers and outdated circuits, Edeeste is not only focusing on improving its infrastructure but is also actively engaging with the community to address losses. The company has recorded increased collections, achieving an impressive 99% in November alone. As part of the ongoing measures, the three distributors have acquired 161,000 meters, a significant step in resolving issues related to metering.
