Ecuador to Invest USD 500 Million in Electricity Distribution Works in 2023, Benefiting 2 Million Citizens

22 May 2023

In a recent press release, the Ministry of Energy and Mines in Ecuador announced its plans to invest USD 500 million in electricity distribution works in 2023.

The investment will focus on improving the quality of service, expanding the electrical system, and modernizing infrastructure to enhance the reliability, continuity, and capacity of the country's electrical system. These initiatives are expected to benefit 2 million Ecuadorians.

The projects will include various aspects such as rural electrification systems, secondary distribution, smart grids, network upgrades, and the construction and repowering of substations and sub-transmission lines. The investments will increase the installed capacity of power transformers and improve the interconnection between substations, effectively meeting the growing energy demand in Ecuador.

The Ministry of Energy and Mines, through its 10 distribution companies, plans to execute 1,221 projects across the country. These projects involve the construction and repowering of feeders, the replacement of transformation centers, and the implementation of new network extensions. Additionally, the plan includes the installation of around 50,000 LED luminaires to improve public lighting, particularly in areas with high insecurity or outdated infrastructure.
