Eaton Joins Singapore Programme to test AI Transformers
Eaton has announced an expanded collaboration with the National University of Singapore-led Sustainable Tropical Data Centre Testbed (STDCT) to advance testing and validation of next-generation transformer-based power systems for AI-ready data centres in tropical environments.
A key element of the initiative is the deployment and evaluation of advanced transformer technologies, including a 2.5 MW medium-voltage solid-state transformer (MVSST) container developed by Eaton. The system is designed to support high-density computing loads typical of AI workloads while improving efficiency, modularity, and grid integration.
The transformer platform will first be showcased at Data Centre World 2026 before being installed at Jurong Island for real-world trials under STDCT Phase 2. The testbed will assess long-term performance, reliability, and sustainability in tropical operating conditions, where heat and humidity present additional engineering challenges.
STDCT 2.0, hosted on Jurong Island, functions as a live research environment combining academic study and industrial deployment. Data collected from transformer operations will be shared with industry partners to support the development of scalable designs for hyperscale and colocation data centres.
Findings from the programme are expected to inform future specifications for transformer-based architectures used in high-density computing environments, particularly those supporting AI-driven workloads.
