Ealing Electricity Network Gets £5.4m Resilience Upgrade from SSEN

16 May 2025
Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) has launched a £5.4 million upgrade of its Southfield Road substation in Ealing, West London. The project is part of a broader £75 million investment aimed at strengthening the region's electricity infrastructure to support future demand and green energy technologies.

The upgrade will see the installation of two new transformers, constructed offsite by contractor OCU Group and connected in stages to limit disruption. The substation currently serves around 20,000 customers, who are expected to benefit from increased reliability and capacity.

Initial demolition works are already underway, with major electrical installations set to begin in Autumn 2025. The project is expected to complete by Summer 2026.

Matthew Carter, Project Manager at SSEN, said the project is essential for meeting rising energy needs and enabling the transition to low-carbon technologies. Joseph Hurling, Senior Project Manager, added that the initiative will allow for greater integration of renewable energy sources, including electric vehicles and heat pumps.

This investment underscores ongoing efforts to future-proof London's electricity network and enhance sustainability across urban communities.
