E.On to commission 2,500 digital transformer stations in Germany

10 May 2019

E.On plans to commission 2,500 digital transformer stations in the service areas of its four German distribution grid operators - Avacon, Bayernwerk, E.DIS and Hansewerk, by the end of 2019.

Starting this year, E.On will install digital transformer stations in Germany, which will be the centerpiece of the smart grid that is being integrated into E.On's distribution grids, reports ELP.

With these transformer stations, it is possible to monitor and control any situation in the power grid from the grid control center, controlling also current flow and voltage in the downstream system.

In the future, grids will have to function in both directions: they will bring electricity to the customer while at the same time collecting and transmitting more and more green electricity. This requires digital technology to make physical data available along the entire route.

The possibility to remotely control grids also reduces downtimes in the event of faults, allowing grid operators quick and easy access to the stations of the affected line.
