E.ON has launched a large-scale procurement initiative worth over $6.5 billion USD to strengthen Germany's power grid--placing particular emphasis on expanding and upgrading the country's transformer capacity. The contracts secure the supply of nearly 29,000 distribution and power transformers, forming the backbone of a modern, resilient, and sustainable electricity network.

Signed with German and European manufacturers, the long-term agreements also cover more than 100,000 kilometers of medium- and low-voltage cables, 10,000+ digital local network stations, and over 500 switchgear systems for substations. These components are critical for connecting renewable energy sources, electric vehicles, heat pumps, and battery storage systems to the grid.

Thomas König, Chief Operating Officer Networks at E.ON, said: "Massive investments and consistent standardization and digitization are our central contribution as a grid operator to advance the energy transition in Germany and make it economical."

Transformers are at the core of this strategy, enabling greater efficiency, faster deployment, and future-ready grid capacity. By standardizing technical specifications, E.ON aims to reduce production complexity, cut costs, and accelerate grid rollout.

The focus on digital infrastructure also includes harmonizing control systems across E.ON's distribution networks by 2029. These systems will be vital in handling the rise of decentralized energy sources through real-time, data-driven management.

Most components will be produced in Germany and other European countries, supporting regional industries and job creation. The procurement strategy not only ensures long-term supply chain stability but also positions E.ON as a key enabler of Germany's clean energy future.
